Vaccinating Your Pet

Pet vaccinations (immunizations) can help fortify your pet’s immune system against infectious, and sometimes life-threatening, diseases. To best protect Birmingham's dogs, cats, and even people from infection, we recommend having pets vaccinated on a regular schedule at every life stage. With a regular immunization schedule, your pet will be better equipped in case of exposure to diseases such as rabies, parvovirus, distemper, and influenza. Cahaba Valley is dedicated to offering affordable preventive care that keeps your companions as healthy as possible for the greatest number of years.

Is your pet receiving the vaccines they need? Let’s find out!

Can Vaccines Make Pets Sick?

Our animal hospital uses the safest and highest-quality vaccines on the market to keep adverse reactions to a minimum. However, some puppies and kittens might seem a bit lethargic the day after their first booster shots, which is normal.

For those rare pets that do experience an allergic reaction, we might opt to discontinue the vaccine responsible. If your pet is not acting like themselves after being vaccinated, let us know immediately.

Recommended Dog Vaccines

There are certain vaccines that every dog needs, in addition to optional vaccines given based on risk level and lifestyle. Rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parvo, and parainfluenza are part of the core immunization category, which means they're essential to your dog's health.

  • Rabies
  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis
  • Parvovirus
  • Parainfluenza
  • Leptospirosis
  • Bordetella
  • Influenza

Vaccines We Recommend for Cats

Cats may live out their days indoors, but that does not mean they are safe from infection. Humans can unknowingly carry harmful bacteria and viruses with them into their homes, which puts our feline friends at risk. Our recommended vaccines for cats include:

  • Rabies
  • Panleukopenia (feline distemper)
  • Herpesvirus
  • Calicivirus
  • Feline leukemia (recommended for kittens and indoor/outdoor cats)
