Remembering Dr. Mark Miller: A Legacy of Compassion and Care
Cahaba Valley Animal Clinic began with a vision. In 1989, Dr. Mark Miller and his wife, Midge, set out to create a client-focused veterinary clinic where every pet owner felt like family and each patient received personalized, compassionate care. After seven months of construction, the clinic officially opened its doors on July 2, 1990. From that first day, Dr. Miller, Midge, their vet tech Jan Huey, and one receptionist started this journey with no clients, no patients, and no appointments – just a dedication to building something meaningful.
Dr. Miller’s path to veterinary medicine was unique. Accepted into veterinary school early after his junior year, he completed his undergraduate degree in Animal and Dairy Science in 1984 while simultaneously finishing his freshman year in vet school. In 1987, he graduated with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), serving as president of his class—a testament to his leadership and dedication. Before moving back to Birmingham, he briefly practiced in Florida, ultimately deciding to return to be closer to family.
A devoted veterinarian, Dr. Miller quickly became a beloved figure within the community. His warm and approachable nature endeared him to clients, who fondly called him “Mark.” Known for his dry humor and his personable, down-to-earth demeanor, he made every effort to put clients at ease, often writing special messages on the bandages of his furry patients. An avid cyclist, he frequently biked during lunch breaks, embodying a love for life that his clients and friends deeply admired.
Dr. Miller’s sense of duty and commitment extended beyond the clinic. He served in the Alabama Army National Guard‘s 20th Special Forces Group for seven years, rising to the rank of Captain before his honorable discharge. Outside of work, he co-owned the Acton Road ER Clinic and cultivated diverse passions—from his love of golf and cycling to enjoying spending time with his loved ones. These experiences enriched his life, instilling qualities of resilience, discipline, and compassion that he brought into his veterinary practice.
Dr. Miller and Midge worked tirelessly side-by-side until their retirement in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and care.
Dr. Miller’s life was marked by his steadfast commitment to his family and his community. He and Midge raised a daughter, Elizabeth, who carries forward his values and love for animals. Dr. Miller passed away in 2021, leaving a legacy that endures through the continued work of Cahaba Valley Animal Clinic. Today, we honor his memory by keeping his vision alive and continuing to provide the high standard of care he was known for.
Dr. Mark Miller’s life was one of purpose, compassion, and genuine connection, and he will forever be remembered as a devoted veterinarian, husband, father, and friend. His impact on the lives he touched is immeasurable, and his spirit remains at the heart of Cahaba Valley Animal Clinic.
